I must become a lionhearted girl.

the continual quest to being ‘unique’

Everyone likes to feel unique. There’s only one of me and no one else just like it. We know, of course, this is true to an extent, yet, we so easily feel we can be lost in a crowd: merely blending in with the rest of society. It is no surprise then that we try so hard to be individual.

BUT, I feel like current popular culture emphasises this, commercialises on it even. We don’t listen to ‘mainstream’ or ‘commercial’ music, we try and find a unique fashion sense, yet, retailers recognise this and we succumb to their advertising, you will buy something supposedly retro and chic and you will see someone else who had the same desire wearing the same thing (perhaps wearing it better). You find pretentious little ‘hipster’ or ‘fashionable’ places where people move to- I always find that funny, as if an area is so cool that already everyone in it must be considered more knowledgeable in the arts, thus, more cultured.

I guess the question is, in trying NOT to fit in are we somehow losing the true sense of who we are? Are we thinking so hard about our actions, our hair, our dress sense, what we eat, where we go, what music we listen to etc etc that we forget what it was once like to just simply be. To be that little kid that doesn’t give a sh*t. Or is this all simply a road to finding yourself? You gotta’ love the unknown..

Do we want the truth or something beautiful?

Gym day…

I recently joined the gym, I would like to say that this is because I am all for being healthy and happy but really, I was sick of feeling fat and felt it was time to act.

The thing is, what they don’t tell you is that when you go the gym you see all of these perfectly toned men and women, so when your eyes flicker to your own lumps and bumps all you can think of is ‘Oh God, I really need to stop eating!’

Don’t get me wrong there are plenty of people that aren’t super model size but your mind tells you to focus on those that are: the question is why is this the case?

Do we blame the media? Do we blame the fickle nature of human beings?

I’m going with both, I hate that we are constantly bombarded with celebrity images of ‘beautiful’ people with ‘perfect’ hair and bodies! I hate that youngsters are nurtured in a society where Summer ‘bikini bodies’ are our aspirational goals. (Myself included)!

I also hate that we so readily take the above as truth, we base so many actions on people’s attractiveness, whether we date/marry them, help them, stalk(?) them, even bother to talk to them… (if you don’t believe me look up ‘the halo effect’)

I await the day where we start exercising for health rather than beauty. The day that ‘beauty’ is considered as more than what’s on the outside. It’s sad that the cynic that I am believes that society is losing more morality as the days pass rather then reinstating it.
